The Iranian Cemeteries Project seeks to preserve the valuable genealogical information found on gravestones in cemeteries throughout Iran. It consists of indexes on this website containing the names of the deceased, birthdates and deathdates, grave locations, grave inscriptions, and grave images. We also plan to enter this information on BillionGraves, a genealogy-oriented, searchable GPS cemetery data website with many Iranian cemeteries already in its database. We would appreciate help entering this information on BillionGraves.

The Collections and Databases contains links to existing online Iranian cemetery indexes, but most are not functional or not operational from certain countries.

If you are able, please support this project by taking photos of gravestones in Iranian cemeteries. Small town cemeteries and pre-1979 gravestones in city cemeteries are this Project’s priorities. If you have photos or other helpful information for this Project, please reach out via the Contact Form or our social media.

Zahiroddoleh Cemetery (گورستان ظهیرالدوله)

Zahiroddoleh Cemetery is located in the Tajrish neighborhood of Tehran (35.811991, 51.433470). The cemetery’s namesake, government official and Naser al-din Shah’s son-in-law Ali Khan Qajar Davalu “Zahiroddoleh,” was the first to be buried there, in June 1924. At the time, the site was adjacent to, or perhaps part of, the Imamzadeh Ghasem Cemetery (Tehranica). After 1340 SH (c. 1961), burials were only permitted by special permission (Tehranica), and the cemetery closed for burials entirely after the 1979 Revolution (ISNA). A large flood in 1366 SH (c. 1987) severely damaged the cemetery, and it was declared a National Monument of Iran on April 1, 1998 (ISNA). 595 people were buried in Zahiroddoleh Cemetery, including several famous writers, such as Forough Farrokhzad, Iraj Mirza, and Malek al-Shoara Bahar (Iraniraniha). We are indebted to the work of Farshid Rad for recording the information that makes up this index.
